According to James Gunn, Groot is growing in size, just like his father. We saw a middle-aged version of Groot in “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” and he was still growing; also, his head isn’t as big as it was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. Holiday Special is now streaming on Disney+. Groot will also appear in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
On Twitter, Gunn responds to a Twitter user, when asked about Groot’s new look. A fan asked, “if Groot’s head is so big because he’s still growing into it or because that’s just the way this Groot is and not at all like the slim OG Groot!”
Gunn replied. “Well, YA Groot, or Swoll Groot, as we call him, is getting bigger, outward as well as upward. As you can see by now he has a different, stockier physiology (and a more outgoing personality) than his father did.”
When a fan praised the incredible VFX for Groot, Gunn told the fan, “Groot was created solely by our incredible VFX artists, but thank you (and I’m sure they find that you think it was practical very encouraging!).” He thanked Framestore and Weta Digital for developing the VFX. Gunn added, “Swoll Groot is 100% computer generated thanks to the fine folks at @Framestore & @weta_digital.”
Groot will next appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Vin Diesel will be voicing Groot. The synopsis follows, “In Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Watch the new trailer below.
