Rockstar Games‘ upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is set in the open-world state of Leonida—based in Florida—which includes Vice City. We have updated all the leaks of protagonists, antagonists, companions, strangers, and more.
GTA 6 Protagonist and Character Details
Details and leaks about the GTA 6 protagonist, Lucia, reveal that she is the first female lead in a modern GTA. She is a Latina mother whose child appears in cutscenes, with hacking as her main ability. Inspired by Bonnie, the partner of Clyde, she is voiced by Manni Perez.
For GTA 6, Rockstar Games continues with multiple playable characters: Jason and Lucia—the first female protagonist in modern Rockstar history. Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, they appear to be in a relationship. Players can switch between them anytime by pressing “Down” on the D-Pad—mirroring the character switch mechanic from GTA V.
Alongside Jason and Lucia, GTA 6 originally planned for four playable characters—including Billy and Kai as listed in a leaked Dev Menu. Rockstar later opted to reduce the number to two protagonists. Other mentioned characters include Boobie, Chester (Chester’s Music), Dale (Dale’s Shopwell), Danny, Dre (Nightclub Manager), Iris (Iris Laundry), RB Shaw, Sam, Shanese, Tit (Nightclub DJ), Wyman, Vicky, YJ (Minimap), and Zach.
The story revolves around a criminal duo: Lucia, the first female protagonist in the series since 2000, and her male partner. The first trailer shows Lucia starting as a prison inmate and later escaping custody alongside her partner.
In an interview with CNBC, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick stated, “We narrowed the timing because we are highly confident in that timing.” He also mentioned, as reported by VGC, “Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time. I do believe that the right strategy for our business is to be where the consumer is, and historically what this company has done is address consumers anywhere they are, on any platform that makes sense, over time.”
During an interview (GamesRadar) at TD Cowen’s 52nd Annual Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Zelnick discussed the major growth of the gaming industry since the last GTA release. “I do think the world’s in a different place than it was when we launched GTA 5,” Zelnick explained, reflecting on the series’ history without microtransactions and a dedicated GTA Online version. He noted, “[GTA] was neck and neck with Call of Duty at that point as the biggest franchise in the business,” contrasting it with GTA’s current status as “the number one entertainment property of all time, across all forms of entertainment,” following GTA 5’s sales of over 200 million units.
GTA 6 is scheduled for release in late 2025 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
