Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s upcoming The Bride! starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley will feature ‘big dance numbers,’ says Peter Sarsgaard, who plays a detective in the film. He described the movie as ‘punk,’ ‘violent,’ and ‘wildly romantic.’
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sarsgaard described The Bride! as “so ambitious” and praised it as one of the best scripts written by his wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal. He said, “It’s the best script I’ve ever read. It really was satisfying on so many levels.”
Sarsgaard revealed that Bale’s presence brings a unique leadership that influences the entire set—alongside director Gyllenhaal. He also describes Buckley as an abstract, random, and free-flowing actor—deeply in the moment. Buckley’s major talent in singing and dancing further contributes to the film’s big dance numbers.
He said, “There are big dance numbers and stuff in the movie. I’m so happy with the way that Warner Bros. has supported Maggie on the movie, too. It’s nice to work with Pam Abdy over there who I worked with on Garden State back in the day. It’s a great studio that has artistically-minded people running it.”
Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the film, drawing inspiration from James Whale’s 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, which was itself adapted from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. She also serves as a producer alongside Osnat Handelsman-Keren, Talia Kleinhendler, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff.
The cast includes Penélope Cruz as Myrna, Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, Buckley as Frankenstein’s bride, Sarsgaard as a detective, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film’s logline follows: “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman, and the bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.”
Recently, Bale and Buckley were spotted in monster costumes on the set of The Bride!.
‘The Bride! scheduled to be released in the United States on September 26, 2025, by Warner Bros Pictures.
