Marvel Studios had plans to develop multiple Guardians of the Galaxy projects in the future.
James Gunn has revealed that Marvel Studios had plans for three spin-offs of Guardians of the Galaxy, reportedly including a Ravagers series, a Legendary Star-Lord project, and a Rocket Raccoon and Groot project.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn was asked if Marvel Studios reaches out to him for guidance on future ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ projects.
Gunn said, “I don’t know the exact legal answer to that… I’m excited for them to go do whatever they want with those characters.”
Gunn is now the head of DC Studios. He previously directed Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). The last Guardians movie ended with the team split and separated, but it is rumored that the Guardians will return in Avengers: Secret Wars.
In an interview with Esquire, Gunn says he is excited to see the Guardians’ legacy continue — but with a new group, a new director, and perhaps a new title.
Gunn said, “I don’t think there will ever be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4.” He added, “There’s many reasons this group will not be back. There could be more Guardians movies, but it won’t be with this group.”
According to Gunn, he has one rule for the next Guardians of the Galaxy director: bring their own unique vision and not copy Gunn’s style.
“I think as long as somebody brings themselves to it, and doesn’t just try to copy that style, I think it can be really amazing,” Gunn said. “And there are so many directors I would like to do that. I would love to see it happen.”
