Finally, Disney is adding a live-action Tangled movie to its lineup of reboots, joining other projects like Moana, Snow White, Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, Prince Charming, and more.
According to Deadline, a live-action Tangled remake is in development at Disney. Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is in talks to direct. No casting announcements have been made yet.
The script is written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for Do Revenge, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Sony’s upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. The live-action film is a revival of Disney’s Oscar-nominated 2010 animated feature, the studio’s 50th animated film.
‘Tangled’ will be a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm—plot details are currently under wraps. The film is expected to follow a similar storyline to the animated version.
The film is produced by Kristin Burr for Burr! Productions, alongside Emmy-winning producer Lucy Kitada (The Baby-Sitters Club).
Tangled is a Disney animated musical film released in 2010. It is based on the German fairy tale “Rapunzel,” made famous by the Brothers Grimm. Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the movie stars Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a lively princess with magical, golden hair. She escapes her tower for the first time to see the world and goes on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi). Along the way, she discovers her true identity and learns the dark truth about the woman (Donna Murphy) who kept her locked away. The film made over $590 million worldwide.
During an interview, Levi said he would return as Flynn in a live-action Tangled remake if Florence Pugh plays Rapunzel. He mentioned, “There was this thing floating around the internet—I just saw it, somebody sent it to me—that Florence Pugh might potentially play the role of Rapunzel. And if Florence plays Rapunzel, what about me? Which would also be a trip because my real last name is Pugh, p-u-g-h, Zachary Levi Pugh, so you’d have [makes pew-pew noise] in Tangled. Come on!”
Tangled will begin production soon, and the release date is expected to be announced around that time.
