A new The Lion King spinoff film is reportedly in the works at Disney.
According to insider Daniel Richtman in his new Patreon post, it is confirmed that another The Lion King “live-action” spinoff film is in development. However, it is not yet clear whether it will follow the adventures of Simba or Mufasa.
As per reports, Disney is also considering making a Timon and Pumbaa spinoff. We can expect an update from Disney soon.
In an interview with Dexerto, Billy Eichner, who voices Timon in the movie, said that he and Seth Rogen, who voices Pumbaa, are “ready to go” for a Timon and Pumbaa spinoff. Eichner also shared what the story of such a project could be.
Eichner said, “Everyone’s asking about it. Seth and I, we’re ready to go. We need people to make noise about a Timon and Pumbaa movie.” Eichner added, “I think it’s very, very important that we all talk about that constantly.”
Eichner continued, “I think some sort of a road trip movie would be fun, where they go on an adventure, meet new characters, and then maybe touch base with the classic characters. A real fun, colorful comedy.”
The Lion King live-action film series is a $2 billion franchise. The first movie, released in 2019 and directed by Jon Favreau, grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide during its theatrical run. In 2024, the prequel and sequel to The Lion King, titled Mufasa: The Lion King, was released. The movie is currently running in theaters and has grossed $540 million.
Here’s the plot details for Mufasa: The Lion King:
Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
Mufasa: The Lion King has received its digital release date. The film is expected to release on Disney+ in February 2025.
