Warning: This post contains potential spoilers for Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
A new look at Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm/Human Torch absorbing all the fire from fully burning buildings in The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been revealed in new footage.

In the clip below, you can see Quinn’s Johnny Storm arriving in flames and absorbing fire from multiple buildings. In Marvel Comics, Johnny can absorb external heat and flames to increase his energy reserves. In some Fantastic Four issues, Johnny has also absorbed large fires or explosions to prevent damage and temporarily store the energy.
Here’s the character description for Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch:
“Johnny can burst into flames, fly thousands of feet into the sky, and absorb explosions into his body—all without breaking a sweat. As the most popular member of the Fantastic Four, Johnny spends his weekends chasing thrills. But when the Fantastic Four are in the heat of battle, they can always count on Johnny to keep cool.”
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Quinn discussed his adaptation of Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
He said, “He’s a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also, he’s funny.” Quinn added, “Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin Feige were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil‑may‑care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don’t think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people’s feelings, and hopefully there’s a self‑awareness about what’s driving that attention‑seeking behavior.”
Here’s the plot details for The Fantastic Four: First Steps:
Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Quinn) — as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god named Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, things suddenly get very personal.
The film also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles. Directed by Matt Shakman, produced by Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito, Grant Curtis, and Tim Lewis.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters and IMAX on July 25, 2025.
