Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again season 1 was originally set to include a special “bottle episode” centered on Alaqua Cox’s Echo and Jon Bernthal‘s Punisher, confirmed by Daredevil: Born Again writer Jesse Wigutow. But midway through filming, Marvel decided to rework the Disney+ series, turning it into a direct continuation of the fan-favorite Netflix Daredevil series.
Speaking to IGN, Wigutow said the special episode featuring Cox’s Echo and Bernthal’s Punisher would explore the two characters spending an interesting night together—not romantically, but in a story-focused way. Although the studio scrapped the idea, a fresh pilot and season finale were filmed, and additional scenes were added to include more characters from the Netflix show.

Wigutow said, “They were looking to do a kind of singular bottle episode around the Punisher crossing into the Daredevil space.” He added, “This was two, three years ago, and one thing led to another, and I came in to largely focus on that.”
“It involved the Punisher and Echo spending an interesting night together—not romantically, but narratively,” he teased, before acknowledging that the idea ultimately “fell away.”
Wigutow hinted that the concept might return in some form, but it was part of a previous version of the series.
“Who knows, maybe it will come back again,” he continued. “But the story has been a little crooked in terms of development, and it was part of a former idea.”
According to Wigutow, there was an effort by the team to make the Disney+ series separate from the Netflix Daredevil series, creating a new concept for the show. Some elements of the original approach worked well, while others did not meet expectations. Marvel made a deliberate decision to shift the series’ direction—a “left turn”—to better align it with the Netflix show’s legacy.
Here’s the plot details for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1:
After many years, Daredevil is returning to our screens in a brand-new original series, Daredevil: Born Again, which is a continuation of the hit Netflix series. Daredevil: Born Again follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, as he fights for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political ambitions in New York. When their past identities begin to resurface, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+, and Season 2, which recently wrapped filming, will premiere on Disney+ in March 2026, with eight episodes released weekly as part of the MCU’s Phase Six.
