Chris Evans revealed that Marvel Studios approached him multiple times about returning as Steve Rogers after Avengers: Endgame. For Evans, it wasn’t until Avengers: Doomsday that a story finally felt right for his return.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and producer Louis D’Esposito pitched Evans a Nomad storyline following Endgame. Evans said the concept was “great,” but it didn’t feel like the right time to continue Steve Rogers’ story. Instead of turning it down completely, Evans encouraged Marvel to keep bringing him new ideas for the character.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly (via SDCC), Evans said, “When we finished Endgame in 2018, Lou and Kevin took me to dinner and said, ‘We’d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad.’ They showed me a pitch, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t feel right at the time.” He added, “Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches. They were all wonderful, but it just never quite felt right.”

When the cast of Avengers: Doomsday was asked whether the characters in the film would know that Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark, Evans replied:

“We can’t touch that.”

Robert Downey Jr. then jokingly added:

“Can’t touch this.”

Although, Evans says he is open to returning as Steve Rogers in future MCU projects.

“I guess it’s a never-say-never, but I’m certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe. This stuff has earned its position over a long period of time. You don’t want to mess with that.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they are set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they have ever encountered.

The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Kathryn Newton, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Mabel Cadena, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía.

Avengers: Doomsday is produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz.

Tickets are now on sale to see the film in Infinity Vision, a new certification for Premium Large Format theaters. Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters across the United States on December 18, 2026.
