Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, Weapons, and the Resident Evil reboot, is now making a new sci-fi horror film titled The Flood about AI and human nature, starring Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role.
Cregger will direct the film and write the screenplay based on his original idea. Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema is behind the film after acquiring the project from Netflix earlier this year.
The sci-fi thriller follows a crew on a remote space station who discover an alien object that distorts time, reality, and the mind. Cregger says the film is “disturbing” but not a horror movie.
Zach Cregger’s The Flood Described as “Very Alien-Esque”

According to Dead Central, The Flood is described as “very Alien-esque” and follows “a deep-space captain who leads her crew to investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world, only to uncover an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with an incomprehensible intelligence.”
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Cregger says he loves the story of The Flood and considers it personally important. He describes the film as disturbing but not a horror movie, although it will contain some horror scenes. Like Weapons and Barbarian, the film will have a unique narrative structure, but it will not jump between different perspectives.
Cregger said, “I just love the story, dude. That movie is about something in a real way that’s important to me. It’s another bizarre narrative structure in the way that Weapons and Barbarian are, but it’s not jumping perspectives. It unfolds in a very unique way that I’m really proud of. It’s disturbing, but it’s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it.”
He added, “It feels intimidating to me. I’m still not really sure how to make it, but I think that’s a good thing. It’s hard to talk about it without talking about the story. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to make that movie. I’m in love with that story in a really unique way.”
In an interview with ScreenRant at the Resident Evil red carpet premiere, Zach Cregger confirmed that The Flood is currently in casting and “soft prep.” The team hopes to begin full pre-production in February, with filming expected to begin next summer.
Cregger said, “It’s science fiction, and it’s probably my most disturbing film. It’s not a horror movie, but it has a lot of horror in it. I love it. I think it’s really, really special. I’m excited about it.”
The film is being produced by Amblin Entertainment, alongside Cregger’s frequent collaborators Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.
The Flood is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 11, 2028.
