John Wick Director Chad Stahelski Reveals Creating an Oscar Category for Stunts

According to Chad Stahelski, director of John Wick, discussions about creating an Oscar category for stunts have occurred recently between the Academy and several stunt coordinators. Stahelski said his step toward making this idea a reality was the John Wick: Chapter 4 action sequence.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Stahelski was asked about his thoughts on a Stunts category at the Oscars or why it hasn’t happened yet. Stahelski replied, “In the last couple of months, we’ve been meeting with members of the Academy and actually having these conversations, and, to be honest, it’s been nothing but incredibly positive and incredibly instructional. I think, for the first time, we’ve made real progress toward making this happen.” He added, “I think it’s something that can happen as soon as, you know, the next Oscars, or at least the one after that, at the latest, in the next three or four years. I think there are a lot of working parts, but there’s also when you say that, I ask you a question back. Okay, so I’m the Academy; you’ve come to me and said we should have stunts in the Oscars, and I go, I agree with you.”

According to Joe Drake, the chairman of Lionsgate’s motion picture group, the fifth installment of the John Wick franchise is in development.
