Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. The film is based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! and focuses on the controversy surrounding Dylan’s transition to electrically amplified instrumentation. Watch the trailer above.

What is the Plot of A Complete Unknown?

Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

The film is directed by two-time Oscar nominee James Mangold for Searchlight Pictures. The script is penned by Jay Cocks, with Mangold handling revisions.

Timothée Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, joined by Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, and Norbert Leo Butz as Alan Lomax. Scoot McNairy portrays Woody Guthrie, while P.J. Byrne plays Harold Leventhal. Other key roles feature Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth, Eriko Hatsune as Toshi Seeger, Charlie Tahan as Al Kooper, and Michael Chernus as Dave Van Ronk.

According to Mangold, Chalamet will also perform his own singing in the film. He said, “It’s such an amazing time in American culture—the story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with $2 in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years. He was first embraced by the folk music family in New York, but eventually, as his star rose, he outgrew them. It’s such an unbelievable, true story about a pivotal moment in American history, involving figures like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez.”

Produced by Michael Bederman, Fred Berger, Bob Bookman, Timothée Chalamet, Alan Gasmer, Alex Heineman, Peter Jaysen, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, James Mangold, Andrew Rona, and Jeff Rosen, A Complete Unknown is a collaboration between production companies Range Media Partners, Veritas Entertainment Group, The Picture Company, and Turnpike Films.

The Complete Unknown will hit theaters on December 25, 2024, in the U.S. and on January 17, 2025, in the U.K.
