A live-action adaptation of the acclaimed video game Elden Ring is officially in the works at A24, with Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Warfare) directing and having written the screenplay.

In a recent New Yorker article about A24, Noah Sacco, now the studio’s head of film, spoke about the project. Sacco recalled meeting Garland five years ago, when Garland offered to write a script on spec to earn Hidetaka Miyazaki’s approval.

Garland wrote a 160-page draft and created 40 pages of visual material to pitch his live-action Elden Ring movie. Sacco and Garland later traveled to Japan to finalize the deal with developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Elden Ring is A24’s second venture into video game adaptations, following its upcoming film based on Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. Sacco noted that both Miyazaki and Kojima are regarded as auteurs in their fields, and his first question to Kojima was whether he wanted to direct the film himself—underscoring the studio’s respect for these creators’ artistic visions.

According to Production List, Elden Ring is scheduled to begin production in January 2026 and is expected to wrap by mid-2026, with shooting locations planned for the United Kingdom and Canada.

“Elden Ring is set in the mystical Lands Between, where a Tarnished warrior embarks on a quest to restore the shattered Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.“

Elden Ring, released in February 2022 to critical acclaim, is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world where players explore vast lands and dungeons. Developed by FromSoftware under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, it is based on a story by George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones. Over 30 million copies have been sold worldwide. A spin-off, Elden Ring: Nightreign, is set to release globally on May 30.

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider report, Cailee Spaeny and Kit Connor are in talks to join the cast of Garland’s Elden Ring.

The film is produced by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich from DNA Films. George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis are also involved in the production.

Elden Ring’s release date is yet to be announced.
