In ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ we see Mothra, the “Queen of the Monsters,” return. As we all saw, Mothra dies during a battle against the villainous monster King Ghidorah in 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.’ Mothra transfers her life energy to Godzilla, giving him the power boost needed to defeat King Ghidorah.
How Does Mothra Appear in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire? Adam Wingard Explains
According to director Adam Wingard, the Mothra we see in ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is the mother of the one seen in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.’
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Wingard said, “This is essentially Mothra’s mother. ‘The eggs that were laid on the surface were laid by The New Empire’s version of Mothra and this film establishes that she is the protector of the pathways to the surface which are vortexes. And so, theoretically, this Titan has access to these vortexes and laid eggs on the surface, which is what we saw in King of The Monsters. She is the original one.”
Unfortunately, Wingard is not returning to direct Legendary’s ‘Godzilla x Kong’ sequel. He has successfully directed the two Monsterverse films, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’. However, the studio is open to him returning in the future.
The Legendary Monsterverse franchise has now earned $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office. In 2023, the TV show expanded based on the Monsterverse, with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, becoming the highest-rated Apple TV+ show. It has been renewed for a second season, and spin-offs are in the works.
‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is now available on VOD platforms.
