It’s official that Bill Skarsgård will return as Pennywise in the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry, which is scheduled to release on Max in 2025.
On the X platform, Max made the announcement and wrote, “Just when you thought your nightmares were over… Bill Skarsgård has been cast in the Max Original Series Welcome to Derry (working title), reprising his role as Pennywise from “It” and “It Chapter Two.”
The show is set in 1960s Derry, leading up to the events of the films in Stephen King‘s It universe. It serves as a prequel to Andy Muschietti‘s It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), which together grossed $1.17 billion worldwide. The series consists of 9 episodes, with Muschietti directing 4 of them.
The show is produced by Warner Bros. Television and developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. The executive producers are Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, and Bill Skarsgård.
Skarsgård joins the previously announced cast, which includes Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider. Madeleine Stowe will appear in a recurring role. (Watch the first look teaser)
In a statement, the Muschietti siblings said, “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces.” They added, “It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.”
‘Welcome to Derry’ will premiere in 2025 on Max.
