David Lowery, the director of ‘Mother Mary,’ is developing a film adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s ‘Death in Her Hands,’ as confirmed by Il Post. The story follows an elderly widow whose life is upended when she discovers a cryptic note during a walk in the woods, causing her to question everything about her new home.
“Death in Her Hands is the story of a woman, Vesta, who comes across a note on her forest walk. The note suggests there has been a murder, but there’s no body and the details are ambiguous. The entire novel is written as Vesta’s stream-of-conscious thinking about the murder, her community, her marriage to a man named Walter, and her dog, Charlie.”
Moshfegh’s 2015 novel ‘Eileen‘ was recently adapted into a feature film starring Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, and Anne Hathaway. Additionally, Yorgos Lanthimos is currently adapting Moshfegh’s novel ‘My Year of Rest and Relaxation,’ and Andrew Haigh is reportedly adapting her 2014 novel ‘McGlue.’
Lowery is currently in production on ‘Mother Mary,’ starring Michaela Coel and Hathaway. The film is about the relationship between a musician and a fashion designer. A24 has acquired the U.S. rights, with the release date yet to be announced. Following this project, Lowery will begin work on ‘Death in Her Hands.’
The cast, production details, and release date for ‘Death in Her Hands’ are to be revealed in the coming days. I can confirm that the filming is expected to begin in 2025.
