DC’s ‘Lanterns‘ is moving from Max to HBO, with an eight-episode, straight-to-series order. The redeveloped adaptation of the Green Lantern comic comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
The show will be the first live-action series created by DC Studios under co-chairmen/co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Chris Mundy serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Damon Lindelof and Tom King also on board as executive producers and co-writers. Warner Bros. TV is producing the show in collaboration with DC Studios and HBO. The series is based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.” There are no casting details available for the series at this time.
What is the Plot of Lanterns?
According to the ‘Lanterns’ logline, Hal Jordan and John Stewart are two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic team charged with defending a specific realm of the cosmos from evil through the use of rings that bestow an array of superhuman powers. The logline describes new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
In a statement, Gunn says the ‘Lanterns’ show will be a “terrestrial-based mystery.”
Gunn said, “We call it Lanterns, and it is starring two of our favorite Green Lanterns—Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It’s going to be with HBO Max, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective–type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery.”
Casey Bloys, chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content said, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern,’” Bloys added, “As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”
Gunn and Safran said, “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”
‘Lanterns’ will premiere on HBO in 2025.
