Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is now directing Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man 4, starring Tom Holland.
Once again, Marvel Studios and Sony are collaborating on another trilogy featuring Holland’s Spider-Man. Cretton was initially rumored to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars—but Marvel scrapped that plan, and the Russo brothers will direct those movies instead. Following the success of Shang-Chi—Cretton is now working on Marvel’s Wonder Man series as the creator and has directed the first two episodes. He will also return to direct the Shang-Chi sequel.
Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and it is reported that Sony is trying to bring back Zendaya, while Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds won’t be returning. The script is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, known for their work on previous MCU Spider-Man films.
Spider-Man 4 is being characterized as a “street-level civil war“—and there are hints that Kate Bishop, Echo, and Jessica Jones may make appearances in the film. Additionally, Spider-Man 4 may feature appearances by Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. It has also been confirmed that Ant-Man will have a “sizeable role” in the movie.
Filming is scheduled to begin next year and is set to be released in theaters in July 2026. A rumor from The Cosmic Circus‘ Alex Perez states that in Spider-Man 4, Peter Parker will be processing the trauma of his past. He’ll be suffering from PTSD, unable to sleep, and using his vigilantism as a coping mechanism. Alex said, “It’s trauma, PTSD, and a whole lot of nightmares—lots of stressful nights and being unable to sleep, using Spider-Man as a coping mechanism so he doesn’t have to deal with the nightmares of his past.”
Also, Holland’s Spider-Man will face off against Doctor Octopus and Green Goblin again in the MCU, but this time they will be different variants. Inspired by the fight they witnessed during the events of ‘No Way Home,’ people in the MCU could become new variants of these same villains.
