Universal Pictures has released the first official full trailer for the live-action remake of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, starring Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson. Watch the trailer below.
During the trailer release event, dircetor Dean DeBlois said (via THR), “With the rushed production schedule and the limited resources we had on that first movie for DreamWorks, there were things we skipped past that we could have maybe done more justice to—some of the characters, some of the depth of relationships, and the immersive action.” He added, “It’s a reimagining that stays quite faithful to the story, yet finds moments where we could enrich character relationships, add depth, and introduce a bit of mythology that might have been lacking in the original.”
DeBlois said he always felt Astrid didn’t get enough focus in the original film. In the live-action remake, Nico Parker’s version of Astrid has more depth. She comes from a line of great dragon-fighting warriors collected by Vikings. She dreams of becoming the chief of her tribe one day, showing her strong ambition. This also creates some conflict between her and Hiccup.

Here’s the plot details for How to Train Your Dragon:
On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.
With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.
As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.
The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
The film is produced by DeBlois, Marc Platt, and Adam Siegel, with Marc Platt Productions serving as the production company.
How To Train Your Dragon is scheduled to hit theaters on June 13, 2025, by Universal Pictures.
