Elizabeth Olsen credits Marvel films for their role in keeping theaters alive. She explains that Marvel films play a critical role in sustaining theaters by generating significant revenue, which helps them “pay the rent.”
In a live conversation at the Vulture Festival, Olsen says that the success of Marvel films allows smaller, independent films to find a place in theaters. While acknowledging that streaming is sometimes the only option for small films to reach audiences, Olsen views it as a secondary alternative.
Olsen shares her personal preference for creating projects intended for theatrical release, as she highlighted the importance of the cinema experience.
Olsen said, “Marvel films help keep theaters able to pay the rent” She added, “I think streaming is sometimes the only option for small films to be seen, I just don’t have an interest in making something with the intention of knowing it’s for streaming.”
According to Olsen, Marvel always has a clear idea for her return as Wanda Maximoff.
She said, “Every time, it’s character-driven… It’s always like, ‘We have this idea, and that’s why we want you to come back.’ It’s not just like, ‘Let’s throw her in something.'”
Speaking to FM104, Olsen believes her MCU character, Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, has been well utilized in the films, and she’s open to returning. She spoke about the possibility of reprising her role as Wanda in the MCU, saying, “If there’s a good way to use her, I’m always happy to come back.”
A new rumor hints that Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom and Scarlet Witch will team up in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. Olsen is set to return as Scarlet Witch, and this will not be a variant of the character. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday is set to begin in March 2025, with the Russo Brothers directing and Stephen McFeely writing the script. Unusually for Marvel, the Russo Brothers will also produce both films through their AGBO banner.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
