It looks like Emma Stone might win her second Oscar. She got her first one for her role in ‘La La Land.’ Now, she’s getting Oscar buzz for her acting in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things,’ which premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.
‘Poor Things’ Venice Premiere Reports
According to the first reports following the Venice premiere, ‘Poor Things’ is a beautiful, hilarious, and bizarre Frankenstein-style reimagining that gives way to the awakening of primal pleasures and the acting to enjoy them. What a brilliant vision by Yorgos Lanthimos! One of the best films of the year.
From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
The film also stars Ramy Youssef as Max McCandless, Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley, Christopher Abbott as Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington, Margaret Qualley as Felicity, Kathryn Hunter as Swiney, Suzy Bemba as Toinette, and Wayne Brett as Pries.
The film hits select theaters on December 8, 2023, followed by a worldwide release on December 22nd.
