James Gunn Confirms Krypto the Super-Dog’s Role in “Superman: Legacy” and Jokes About Paying Chris Pratt in Crypto
In an interview with the Toronto Sun while promoting “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” James Gunn confirmed that Krypto the Super-Dog will appear in the upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film. Gunn jokingly offered the role to Chris Pratt, whom he suggested could do motion capture on set and walk around on all fours as Krypto. Pratt responded by saying he’d take the role but insisted on being paid in “crypto,” to which Gunn laughed and responded that he’d receive zero dollars.
Gunn: “I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto the Superdog (in Superman Legacy). You could do motion capture on set and walk around on your hands and knees, but you can’t talk.
Pratt: “I’ll do Krypto but you have to pay me in crypto.”
Gunn: “I’ll pay you in crypto, which amounts to zero dollars. [laughs]
Pratt: “It sounds like there’s going to be a character called Krypto in Superman — breaking news.”
That’s a scoop for me.
Gunn: “It is a scoop, I guess.”
Pratt: “Way to go. You’re fired. Back to Marvel.” [laughs]

In a recent interview, James Gunn confirmed that ‘Superman: Legacy’ will not have the same tone as the ones he directs. Gunn confirmed that he respects old Superman movies and that the script he wrote was definitely a sincere superhero film. Gunn said, “How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?” He added, “So it just took me some time to try to figure it out.”
Superman: Legacy follows the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. The film hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
Most recently, the animated film “DC League of Super-Pets,” which will feature Krypto and other super-powered animals, was released. In the film, Dwayne Johnson voiced Krypto, and it follows Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman as inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, when the Man of Steel and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a ragtag group of animals to master their own newfound powers for a rescue mission. The film is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
