Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a new live-action show titled ‘World of Wakanda,’ a spin-off/prequel to the MCU’s Black Panther movies, as confirmed by insider Daniel Richtman in a post on his Patreon.
What is the World of Wakanda About?
World of Wakanda will follow the story of Dora Milaje members Ayo (Florence Kasumba) and Aneka (Michaela Coel)—exploring their relationship and their roles in the defense of Wakanda. The series also touches on the origins of the Midnight Angels—a special forces unit within the Dora Milaje.
No showrunner or writer has been attached to the show yet. It will be part of Marvel Television and is set to premiere on Disney+.
There is a comic related to World of Wakanda, published in 2016 and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, and Yona Harvey. It was canceled after six issues due to poor sales. The comic book series focuses on the main Black Panther comics and delves deeper into the lives of key characters, especially the Dora Milaje—Wakanda’s elite female warriors. It explores themes of loyalty, love, and duty, providing a richer understanding of Wakanda’s social and political landscape.
During D23, Marvel Animation revealed that they are developing an animated series titled Eyes of Wakanda, which delves into Wakandan history. The series is being developed by Todd Harris, who has served as a storyboard artist on many modern action movies.
As per the plot of Eyes of Wakanda—a group of Wakandans will travel back in time to stop the Horde from destroying the world—the show takes place on the Sacred Timeline.
There has been no official announcement from Marvel Studios yet about World of Wakanda. However, we can expect an update by the end of this fall
