Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front, has begun filming his new film The Ballad of a Small Player, starring Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin, The Lobster) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, Okja) in Macau.
Directed by Berger from a screenplay by Rowan Joffé (28 Weeks Later, The American) and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Lawrence Osborne.
According to Netflix’s logline for The Ballad of a Small Player, “When his (Lord Doyle) past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation.”
Recently, Fala Chen (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has joined the cast, with more cast members to be added soon.
The film is the first project to come out of Oscar nominee Berger’s creative partnership with Netflix, via his company Nine Hours. It is produced by Mike Goodridge through his Good Chaos banner, along with Berger and Matthew James Wilkinson for Stigma Films.
‘The Ballad of a Small Player’ will premiere on Netflix in 2025, with the exact date to be announced.
