James Cameron Says He Wants a New Terminator Film as the Real World Becomes “Sci-Fi”

James Cameron plans to develop a new Terminator film, saying today’s world is catching up to his sci-fi ideas as he prepares to focus on the franchise again.

James Cameron revealed he wants to make a new Terminator before the modern world catches up with his ideas. The Titanic and Avatar director already imagined a world where AI turned against humanity in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and that concept now feels closer than ever.

While promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron told Gizmodo that he now has time to focus on what comes next, and the Terminator project is at the top of his list. Once marketing on Avatar: Fire and Ash wraps, Cameron intends to dedicate himself to writing the next Terminator installment.

James Cameron plans to develop a new Terminator film, saying today’s world is catching up to his sci-fi ideas as he prepares to focus on the franchise again.

Cameron said, “I’ll have some time to write and to consider my next projects and the order in which I do them and so on once we’re done with the marketing on this in a month or so.”

He added, “I’ve got a stack of notes this thick [holds fingers about three inches apart], which is how I start all my scripts, on what I want to do with a new Terminator film. I’m going to pour myself into that as a writer.”

According to Cameron, modern technology and global issues have advanced so quickly that sci-fi concepts are now part of everyday life, and he admits that science fiction is “overwhelming us,” as real-life developments are outpacing even the genre’s predictions. He says he’ll never be as “prescient” as he was in 1984 when he created The Terminator, because no one truly knows what the world will look like in just a year or two.

Cameron wants to “future-proof” his next story by staying a couple of years ahead of where technology and society are heading.

Cameron continued, “It’s difficult. I have to tell you.” He added, “Science fiction has caught up and is actually overwhelming us at this point. We’re living in a science fiction world, and we’re literally having to deal with problems that in the past only existed in science fiction books and movies. Now we’re living it for real. I’ll never be as prescient as I was back in 1984 of imagining this one because I don’t think anybody knows what’s going to be happening a year or two years from now. But I at least want to future-proof myself by being a couple years out.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is coming to theaters on December 19, 2025. The film recently held its world premiere, and early reviews call it “the most emotional and possibly the best of the three so far.”

With Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.
