John Crowley’s We Live in Time Premieres at TIFF: Reviews Call It “Sad, Funny, and Heart-Wrenching”

John Crowley‘s We Live in Time had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and the first reactions to the Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield-led movie call it “one of the year’s best.”

We Live in Time Reviews:

According to X user @starblyths, “We Live in Time is PHENOMENAL. It’s sad, funny, and will make you cry. It’s a beautiful story about love and shows that you can do anything without illness holding you back. The chemistry and love between Andrew and Florence are so special and natural.”

According to X user @Mahyad, We Live in Time is “a beautifully emotional, time-hopping romance starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. It balances love and loss with tender performances and a fragmented narrative that captures both joy and heartache.”

According to X user @blewis1103, We Live in Time “might be the perfect rom-com, with an extraordinary balance of humor and genuine heartbreak that never feels out of step or false. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are an effortless, shimmering pair. One of the best surprises of TIFF 2024, perhaps a People’s Choice.”

According to X user @davidcanfield97, We Live in Time is “a sweet, sappy, smart weepie that knows just what notes to hit and when to pull back, but mostly my god, Florence Pugh—a major, devastating performance.”

Directed by Crowley from a screenplay by Nick Payne, the film stars Pugh as Almut, Garfield as Tobias, Adam James as Simon Maxon, Marama Corlett as Adrienne Duvall, Aoife Hinds as Skye, Nikhil Parmar as Sanjaya, Heather Craney as Buffy Jones, and Kara Lynch.

We Live in Time follows Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. Through snapshots of their life together — falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family — a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.

Produced by Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, and Guy Heeley, the film is a collaboration between Film4, SunnyMarch, and StudioCanal.

We Live in Time will have a limited theatrical release in the United States by A24 on October 11, 2024. StudioCanal will release it in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Benelux, Australia, and New Zealand.
