DC’s highly anticipated Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will begin with a Looney Tunes-inspired cartoon starring the Joker.
According to Variety, the sequence—animated by Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville)—leads into scenes of prison riots, courtroom face-offs, and a variety-show sequence featuring Phoenix and Gaga as a homicidal Sonny & Cher.
In ‘Joker: Folie À Deux,’ Arthur Fleck Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix) is institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.
Speaking to Variety, Lady Gaga said, “Todd took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to ‘Joker’ this audacity and complexity.” Gaga added, “There’s music, there’s dance, it’s a drama, it’s also a courtroom drama, it’s a comedy, it’s happy, it’s sad. It’s a testament to [Todd] as a director, that he would rather be creative than just tell a traditional story of love.”
From acclaimed writer/director/producer Todd Phillips comes ‘Joker: Folie À Deux,’ from a screenplay by fellow Oscar nominee Scott Silver & Phillips, based on characters from DC. Phillips produced the film, Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner. Lady Gaga served as music consultant. The film’s executive producers are Michael E. Uslan, Georgia Kacandes, Silver, Mark Friedberg, and Jason Ruder.
The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) and Catherine Keener (‘Get Out,’ ‘Capote’), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from ‘Joker.’
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2024, and will be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 4, 2024.
