Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad, has revealed that the sequel, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, has a broader scope compared to the first movie, significantly expanding the Mario world.
In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, Key says the setting of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 taps into intriguing lore from the Mario universe, making it exciting for fans. The sequel will feature fantastic Easter eggs, hinting at deeper connections and surprises for Nintendo fans.
Key said, “One thing I can say about the second movie is that it’s a little broader in scope, and where it takes place is very intriguing lore and the Mario world.” Key added, “They’re going to find some really fantastic Easter eggs and it’s been very exciting so far.”
Key shared that the creative team has widened the universe for the sequel—expanding the world where the characters live. Audiences will meet new characters—including some old favorites from the Mario franchise. The sequel will also introduce deep-cut Nintendo characters that fans may not expect—adding excitement to the story.
According to Key, the way the story is developing makes these characters particularly intriguing—adding depth to the film.
Key said, “I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
According to Universal Pictures, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘ is described as a “new franchise,” indicating the possibility of a sequel. Co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are set to return for the sequel. Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in The Super Mario Bros. movies, revealed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will play a role in building the “Nintendo cinematic universe.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will hit theaters on April 3, 2026, by Universal Pictures.
