Following a pause in production of Madonna‘s upcoming biopic ‘Who’s That Girl‘—due to her “serious bacterial infection” in June 2023—she is now back to pre-production. Madonna is currently working on rewrites for the screenplay, which she also plans to direct. Julia Garner is set to star.
On Instagram, Madonna shared a post containing an image of her rewriting the movie script with a typewriter and wrote, “I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY. (Story of my life).”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) initially paired up with Madonna to write the screenplay but left the project to work on other ventures. Per Madonna’s Instagram post, the new version of the script features “rewrites by Madonna and ECW”—indicating that she has collaborated with Secretary scribe Erin Cressida Wilson to rework the film.
Madonna said in a statement during the announcement of her biopic, “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being, trying to make her way in this world.” She added, “The focus of this film will always be music.”
“Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive,” she continued. “There are so many untold and inspiring stories, and who better to tell them than me? It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
It is not yet confirmed whether Universal Pictures is currently part of the project—filming will begin soon after the script is ready. Garner becomes the frontrunner to play the legendary artist after a lengthy audition process that involved many stars, including Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demie, vying for the lead role— the candidates experienced intense, sometimes 11-hour choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer and the artist herself. The release date is currently TBA (To Be Announced).
