Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, has won the 2025 New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Screenplay. The film is currently scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States by A24 on December 25, 2025.
Following its premiere, reviews are out, and Marty Supreme has debuted with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is now the second highest–rated live-action film of Chalamet’s career, behind Lady Bird.

Here are some reviews from critics:
According to Variety:
“Marty Supreme is a high-voltage triumph, with Timothée Chalamet turning Marty Mauser’s swagger and magnetic charisma into a hypnotic freefall, while Josh Safdie delivers a spirited ’80s masterpiece, as maddening and propulsive as its antihero.”
According to THR:
“Marty Supreme is a marvel. Calling something ‘a wild ride’ is one of those overused phrases (see also: ‘What a ride!’, ‘The adventure of the summer!’ or ‘A roller coaster!’). But for this immersive sensory experience, it fits perfectly.”
According to IGN:
“Marty Supreme combines Josh Safdie’s chaotic directing style with Timothée Chalamet’s charisma to create a unique ping-pong movie.”
According to IndieWire:
“Timothée Chalamet delivers the performance of his life in Josh Safdie’s sweeping ode to the highs and lows of American greatness. A generational film.”
According to The Daily Telegraph:
“During its two and a half hours— which fly by in what seems like only minutes—Safdie’s film resonated with me like a tuning fork. It is a joyful tribute to the beautiful cacophony of life.”
According to The Independent:
“If Marty Supreme exists to prove that Timothée Chalamet could have easily competed with the icons of 1970s New Hollywood—the Harvey Keitels and the Gena Rowlands—then it’s proven. He is undoubtedly one of our greatest talents.”
Safdie directs the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein, Marty Supreme is loosely based on the life of Marty Reisman, a force to be reckoned with in 1950s ping-pong culture. Known for his unconventional style, Reisman won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960, as well as more than 20 international and national titles.
Here’s the plot synopsis for Marty Supreme:
“A hustler-turned-champion ping pong player Marty Reisman’s journey from playing for bets in Manhattan to winning 22 major titles and becoming the oldest to win a national racket sport competition at 67.”
The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, Spenser Granese, Philippe Petit, Luke Manley, John Catsimatidis, Tracy McGrady, Kemba Walker, Isaac Mizrahi, Naomi Fry, George Gervin, Ted Williams, Emory Cohen, David Mamet, and Fred Hechinger.
Produced by Josh Safdie, Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas, with production companies Elara Pictures and A24.
Marty Supreme hits theaters on December 25, 2025.
