Marvel’s Armor Wars is still in development at Marvel Studios. However, the film is currently on hold. We can expect it to be released after Avengers: Secret Wars.
According to Daniel Richtman in his Patreon post, “The Armor Wars script is being rewritten due to the backlash to Secret Invasion. The story will be entirely different from the original pitch.” The film was originally supposed to release this year, but it will now be released after Secret Wars.
Armor Wars was first announced as a series at SDCC 2022 but was later confirmed by Marvel to be adapted into a film. Speaking to TVLine, when asked about the status of Armor Wars, Don Cheadle replied, “You can find out and let me know.”
When further questioned by TVLine about the update on ‘Armor Wars’ being switched from a TV series to a movie, Cheadle responded: “I think the word that’s the most salient in that sentence is ‘switched.’ I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is.”
According to Nate Moore, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development, who co-produced the films Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Eternals, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Armor Wars is “too big” and “cost-prohibitive.”
Speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Moore said Armor Wars was initially planned as a Disney+ limited series. However, it was reimagined as a film due to budget constraints, as Cheadle interacting with all these armors—defined as a legacy of Tony Stark—became cost-prohibitive to produce as a series.
The film stars Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, an officer with the United States Air Force and liaison between the military and the Department of Acquisitions, as well as Tony Stark’s best friend. Walton Goggins also stars as Sonny Burch. There are rumors that Sam Rockwell may reprise his role as Justin Hammer in the movie.
Armor Wars release date has yet to be announced.
