‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ Episode 9, “Axis Mundi,” is now available on Apple TV+. After a wild Episode 8 ending with Lee Shaw trying to close a portal, Episode 9 shows Lee, Cate Randa, and May in a weird place called Axis Mundi. It’s a cool spot inspired by myths and space, and the creators wanted to bring something different to MonsterVerse’s first TV show.
In an interview with IGN, the show’s co-creator Chris Black said, “We just wanted to do the best version of what we could, but, that said, we were very mindful that [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] is coming out next year, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say it involves the Hollow Earth.” Black added, “So we had to be careful about, you know, not stepping on their toes or spoiling or disrupting any of the story or the reveals that they want in the feature film. So, working with them, we said, ‘Okay, well, we knew that Keiko had disappeared into some kind of subterranean Titan realm. What could be different that isn’t going to be what you’re going to see in or have already in the feature films?'”
Black continued, “The Hollow Earth is not a small place.” He added, “I tend to think of it almost like Middle-earth. There’s the Shire, and there’s Mordor. It’s a vast area with different zones and areas with their own sort of environments, ecosystems, and cryptozoology. So with that in mind, we were able to carve out a place that was unique to the show, in its own little corner of the Hollow Earth universe.”
Episode 9 “Axis Mundi” Explained:
In 2015, Monarch saves Kentaro and Tim from a power plant. Verdugo shares sad news about Cate, May, and Shaw’s losses. Inspired by his mom Emiko, Kentaro decides to keep searching. Kentaro confronts Hiroshi later. Meanwhile, Shaw and May wake up in a Hollow Earth forest looking for Cate. Cate faces a Bramble Boar but is saved by Keiko.
In 1962, Shaw joined Operation Hourglass into the Hollow Earth. Using a Titan lure, things go wrong, and the rift closes. Puckett tells Randa Monarch’s funding is cut. Shaw’s team is killed by an Ion Dragon, and he’s sucked back through the rift.
In 1982, Shaw wakes up in a Monarch hospital. Holding nurse Emiko hostage, he wants to see Randa. Adult Hiroshi says Randa passed away, and Monarch is leaving the Titans alone. Shaw is put under house arrest.
According to the plot, “In 2015, one year after the re-emergence of Godzilla, half-siblings Cate and Kentaro Randa investigate their missing father Hiroshi’s connection to Monarch, the covert organization monitoring giant monsters known as Titans. Two generations earlier, Bill Randa and Keiko Miura were scientists involved with the early development of the Monarch. Former Army officer Lee Shaw becomes a close ally to the Randa family across both time periods.”
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell both play Lee Shaw. The show premiered on Apple TV+ on November 17, 2023.
