Netflix has released the official trailer for Sam Esmail‘s ‘Leave the World Behind,’ starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la Herrold. The film follows a family vacation on Long Island interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world. Watch the trailer below.
What is the Plot of ‘Leave the World Behind’?
In this apocalyptic thriller from award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail, Amanda (Roberts) and her husband Clay (Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers — G.H. (Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) — arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.
The film is written, directed, and produced by Sam Esmail, based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name. Roberts, Lisa Gillan, Marisa Yeres Gill, and Chad Hamilton are also involved in the production. See the poster below.
‘Leave the World Behind’ will premiere at the AFI Fest on October 25, 2023, and hit select theaters on November 22, 2023, followed by its streaming release on Netflix on December 8, 2023.
