On X, user MAJESTIC has shared the leaked Project Hail Mary plot details.
In Project Hail Mary, Dr. Ryland Grace (Gosling) is forced to go on the Ave Maria space mission to save Earth. In the book, this scene is very emotional. He cries and begs them not to send him to die. But in the film, the scene is funnier. Grace tries to run away from the guards, jumps over lockers, and runs outside. The guards catch him and give him an injection to make him sleep, then send him on the mission. This makes the scene less emotional than in the book.

Later, Rocky appears. He is an alien who helps Grace save their star systems. In the film, the scene where Grace saves Rocky is different. Grace jumps from his ship and enters a tunnel to Blip-A by hitting it with a wrench. Rocky comes out of the darkness, and they look at each other without speaking. Some parts from the book are missing. For example, Grace learns he can eat Rocky’s food, called toumeoba, but this is not shown in the film.
Another big difference is the time jump. In the book, about 16 years pass while Grace lives on Erid. In the film, he looks the same age, and we do not clearly see time passing. There is also a scene on Earth where Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) watches the recordings from the mission, and scientists open the Beatles records from the ship. But Grace never learns what happened to Earth, just like in the book. Stratt’s role is smaller in the film, and she does not seem as powerful.
Grace and Rocky’s first meeting also feels different. In the book, Grace is amazed and curious about the alien. In the film, he seems annoyed at first, and Rocky feels like a problem to him. Another scene with Astrophage is changed too. In the book, Grace shoots to stop a black substance coming from Rocky’s shell. In the film, he only does experiments and waits for Rocky to wake up.
The film is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, from a screenplay by Drew Goddard, based on Andy Weir’s New York Times best-selling novel.
The film also stars Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt, Ryland’s superior; Milana Vayntrub plays Olesya Ilyukhina, Ryland’s deceased Russian crewmate; with Lionel Boyce and Ken Leung also appearing in undisclosed roles.
Produced by Lord, Miller, Gosling, Ken Kao, Amy Pascal, and Andy Weir. The film is a collaboration between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lord Miller Productions, and Pascal Pictures.
Project Hail Mary will hit theaters and IMAX in the United States on March 20, 2026, distributed by Amazon MGM Studios through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.
