What is the Plot of Queer?
Set in postwar Mexico City, Queer follows Lee (Daniel Craig), a lonely, middle-aged addict navigating the expatriate scene, from gay bars to drug-fueled escapades. A gifted raconteur yet deeply troubled, Lee becomes infatuated with Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young, bi-curious Oklahoman. Fixated on exploring the Amazon in search of the telepathic ayahuasca, Lee convinces Allerton to join him. Their journey leads to unexpected encounters and harsh revelations about what William S. Burroughs described as “the algebra of need.”
Queer also stars Jason Schwartzman as Frank Cochran, Lesley Manville as Alice Cochran, Henry Zaga as Winston Moor, Drew Droege as John Dume, Ariel Schulman as Tom Weston, Colin Bates as Tom Williams, Ronia Ava as Joan, Perla Ambrosini as Lee’s Mother, and Simon Rizzoni as the Bartender. The film will also feature Omar Apollo, Michaël Borremans, Andra Ursuța, David Lowery, Lisandro Alonso, Ford Leland, Sean Cubito, Diego Benzoni, Radu Murarasu, and Francesco Lupo Sturani.
Produced by Fremantle, Fremantle North America, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment (a Fremantle Group company), and Luca Guadagnino for his Frenesy Film Company, Queer was made in collaboration with Cinecittà and Frame by Frame. The film was financed by Fremantle Group.
Queer was released in the United States through a limited theatrical release on November 27 by A24, followed by a nationwide release on December 13.
