DC Studios is developing an Animal Man project, as we have learned. It is being developed as a movie.
Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Orion and the Dark) has been tapped to write the screenplay for the movie. It is in the early stages of development; as of now, no director or cast has been attached to the project.
Who is Animal Man in DC Universe?
In DC Comics, Animal Man—aka Buddy Baker—gains the ability to tap into the ‘morphogenetic field,’ also known as ‘The Red,’ a mystical energy field that connects all animal life. This power allows Baker to mimic the abilities of any animal, such as the strength of a gorilla, the flight of a bird, or the agility of a cheetah. He can access these abilities even without being near the animals, as long as they exist somewhere on Earth. Created by writer Dave Wood and artist Carmine Infantino, he first appeared in Strange Adventures #180 in 1965.
On X (formerly Twitter), DC’s James Gunn shared the first teaser photo from Peacemaker Season 2. The image teased a half-naked man in a forest, who could potentially be Animal Man/Buddy Baker, appearing in the John Cena-led show. You can see the image below.
According to the first stage of DC Studios’ slate for ‘Gods and Monsters,’ they are developing Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will also include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.
In a statement, Gunn and Peter Safran said, “We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children.”
They added, “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
The release date for the Animal Man movie is currently TBA.
The launch of the DC Universe begins with Creature Commandos, scheduled for release this December, followed by Superman, hitting theaters on July 11, 2025.
