Gladiator 2 Filming Starts This Month: Coliseum Construction in Morocco
The filming for Gladiator 2, directed by Ridley Scott, will begin this month. The first part of the filming will happen in Morocco. The crew is busy building a coliseum for Gladiator 2 in Morocco. You can watch the footage below to see their progress.
The film is led by Paul Mescal, who is playing the role of Lucius, and the other cast members include May Calamawy, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Ridley Scott is directing from a screenplay by David Scarpa. Scott will also produce alongside Scott Free President Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher through Red Wagon Entertainment. Universal and DreamWorks co-produced the first film, and while DreamWorks will not be involved in the sequel, Universal has the right to collaborate again when the project is packaged.
Gladiator tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a general in the Roman army who is betrayed by the emperor’s son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), and sold into slavery. Maximus rises through the ranks of gladiators and becomes a hero to the people of Rome, seeking revenge against Commodus and restoring the Roman Republic.
Russell Crowe Admits Feeling Jealous of Gladiator 2 Cast
In an interview with Collider, Crowe said that he’s “jealous” of the Gladiator 2 cast. He said, “I mean, look, the only thing that I really feel about it is slightly jealous, you know? Because I was a much younger man, obviously, and it was a huge experience in my life.” Crowe added, “It’s something that changed my life, really. It changed the way people regarded me and what I do for a living, and, you know, I’ve been very lucky to be involved in lots of big movies, but the legs on that film are incredible. Here it is; it’s 2023, and we made that film in 1999. I guarantee you that somewhere around the world tonight, Gladiator is going to be showing on primetime TV. And you don’t always get that kind of longevity with every film you do, so it obviously holds a special place in my heart.”
Gladiator 2 will hit theaters on November 22, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
