Robert Downey Jr. has won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘Oppenheimer‘. As of now, he has also won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor.
Downey Jr. accepts BAFTA for ‘Oppenheimer’ with a short, impactful speech. He said, “When I was 15, I wanted to be Peter O’Toole. When I was 25, I worked for Richard Attenborough and Anthony Hopkins. When I was 35, I finally understood why Dickie thought Tony would be a better role model for me than Peter.” Downey Jr. added, “When I was 42, I did two films for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a civil British flare. I then played Tony Stark in the MCU for about 12 years.”
Downey Jr. continued, “And then recently, that dude Christopher Nolan suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to perhaps resurrect my dwindling credibility. So I share this with my fellow nominees, this has been an exceptional year.”
In Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, Downey Jr. portrayed Lewis Strauss, a senior figure in the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, who turned against Oppenheimer, aiming to prove his disloyalty to the U.S.
‘Oppenheimer’ was released in theaters on July 21, 2023, and became a huge success, grossing over $942 million worldwide. It claimed the third-highest-grossing film of the year, the top-grossing World War II-related film, the highest-grossing biographical film, and the second-highest-grossing R-rated film.
