Marvel Studios is in talks with Sam Rockwell to reprise Justin Hammer in ‘Armor Wars‘.
Rockwell played Justin Hammer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Iron Man 2‘ (2010). Hammer, a rival weapons manufacturer to Tony Stark (Iron Man), portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., is shown as less ethical and more willing to engage in unethical practices for success.
Marvel is reportedly looking to secure a director for ‘Armor Wars’ in the first quarter of 2024, with plans to begin filming in 2025, as confirmed by @DanielRPK. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will hire Hammer to build a team of Iron Man.
The Armor Wars series, initially announced at SDCC 2022, has been later confirmed by Marvel to be adapted into a film. In Marvel Comics’ Armor Wars plot, Tony Stark‘s technology and armor are stolen, and a group of villains designs the armor on their own.
Armor Wars is “too big” & “cost prohibitive,” told Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Nate Moore, who co-produced the films (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Eternals, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).
Speaking to a The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Moore said Armor Wars was initially planned as a Disney+ limited series, but it turns out a film due to the budget and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors is defined as a legacy of Tony Stark, that became kind of cost prohibitive to do as a show.
‘Armor Wars’ Plot in Marvel Comics:
In the late 1980s, David Michelinie and Bob Layton wrote the original ‘Armor Wars’ storyline in Marvel Comics. Tony Stark/Iron Man finds out that his technology has been stolen and misused without his consent. Motivated by responsibility and the risks of his tech in the wrong hands, Stark sets out to stop unauthorized users of his armored suits.
The film stars Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine: An officer with the United States Air Force and liaison between the military in the Department of Acquisitions and best friend of Tony Stark and Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch. The script is penned by Yassir Lester, who previously worked with Cheadle in the Black Monday series. The plot details are kept secret.
