Scary Movie 6 is officially in development at Paramount Pictures and is set for a theatrical release.
According to Marlon Wayans, one of the co-developers of the franchise, he confirmed in an interview with BigBoyTV that filming for Scary Movie 6 will begin next year and the movie will be released in 2026.
Wayans says, “We’re going to make a classic.”
The original Scary Movie series, developed by Marlon, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, parodied slashers like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Keenen Ivory Wayans directed and co-wrote the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn co-wrote and starred in them.
The new movie is being written and produced by the Wayans Brothers and Rick Alvarez.
In a statement, Miramax boss Jonathan Glickman said, “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen, and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
During the film announcement, Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Wayans told Deadline, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The Scary Movie comedies made over $896 million worldwide from five films. The first Scary Movie, released in 2000, was one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror films at the time, with a $42.5 million opening. It was the biggest opening for an R-rated horror movie and a Black director at that time. Scary Movie is part of Paramount Pictures’ deal with Miramax, which is the studio behind the franchise. Paramount will release the movie worldwide, and Becky Sloviter from Miramax is overseeing the project.
Scary Movie 6 will hit theaters in 2026, by Paramount Pictures.
