Exclusive: Marvel plans to start filming ‘Shang-Chi 2‘ by late 2025. According to reports, the script is in early development, with Destin Daniel Cretton, director of the first film, set to helm the sequel as well.
What is ‘Shang-Chi 2’ About?
In ‘Shang-Chi 2,’ it will be revealed that the Ten Rings were created by a Kang Variant. Additionally, the Agents of Atlas will make their debut in the movie, with members including Shang-Chi, Katy Chen, Xu Xialing, Wave, and Aero. The movie will reportedly feature time travel and will be one of the untitled films in the MCU’s Phase Six Slate.
Who Will Return?
In the film, Simu Liu returns as Xu Shang-Chi/Shaun, Awkwafina as Katy, and Meng’er Zhang as Xu Xialing. Marvel will announce additional cast members soon.
In an interview with Collider, Liu said, “Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s a pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed.” Liu added, “It feels like we’ve established a world, and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating about and thinking about. And then, we’re getting to revisit some things but also show the viewer new things. We’ll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for in the first movie, but we will also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him. That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”
Simu Liu Update on ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Release
On Threads, when a fan asked about Shang-Chi 2, Liu said it would come after an Avengers movie, possibly The Kang Dynasty. He mentioned the sequel keeps getting delayed due to reasons beyond his control.
Liu said, “It would follow Avengers, but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control. I hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”
‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ came out in theaters on September 3, 2021, as part of the MCU’s Phase Four. It earned over $432 million worldwide, making it the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2021. The movie received praise, including a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards.
Daniel Cretton is developing Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ series for Disney+. Initially confirmed to direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ he later left the project after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended in November 2023.
‘Shang-Chi 2’ is slated for a mid-2026 theatrical release, with rumors suggesting a possible date of July 24, 2026.
