Super Mario Bros. Wonder arrives on the Nintendo Switch on October 20th with exciting changes. We previewed the game’s new badges in August, and they look set to impact the Mario series.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, badges are a significant addition, granting Mario and friends new abilities. These can be unlocked and equipped from the world map, with some, like the Floating High Jump Badge, changing character movements. The Dolphin Kick Badge is handy for swimming, making it easier to cover more distance quickly in the water.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has two types of badges: action badges for new abilities and boost badges for an easier game. For example, the Auto Super Mushroom gives you a power-up at the start of each level, and Safety Bounce helps you bounce out of hazards. The Coin Reward Badge provides coins for defeating enemies, and the Sensor Badge helps you find important items like Wonder Flowers and 10-flower coins.

The badges stay active until you turn them off, even if you get a power-up or touch an enemy. You must finish or exit the stage to change or disable a badge. Yoshis can’t use badges, probably due to their simpler controls for younger players. This game takes an innovative approach to 2D Mario, offering customization through badges while keeping characters consistent at the start. It’s a game-changer for all players and looks promising for the future.

According to Nintendo’s official description:

“Check out Mario’s latest adventure, and see how Wonder Flowers shake up the classic platforming gameplay with all kinds of wild Wonder effects. Take your pick from the largest cast of characters ever seen in a side-scrolling Mario game, and hop into the Flower Kingdom with up to 4 players in local co-op. You’ll even get to try some new power-ups, like the Elephant Fruit!”

Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases on October 20, 2023. You can pre-order now on Amazon.
