The Rocky star Sylvester Stallone has revealed that he has written a few pages for a Rocky prequel, a long-rumored development.
Sylvester Stallone Began Developing the Rocky Prequel
Speaking on the Inspire Me podcast, Sylvester Stallone revealed that he is working on a Rocky prequel that delves into the backstory of Rocky Balboa and other characters. Stallone has wanted to make the prequel for years, with plans to develop it as a streaming series. However, it remains uncertain when the project will come to fruition.
Stallone said to the Inspire Me Podcast, “Rocky Prequel is very near and dear to my heart. I wrote a few pages of it, and it just seems to write itself seeing Adrian at 15 and Rocky at 17 and Paulie moving to a new neighborhood. Rocky is your bad boy. It’s almost like Lady the Tramps, but with real people, it’s going to be wonderful.”
Back in October 2023, in an Instagram post, Stallone explained that the prequel would introduce Rocky as a 17-year-old—struggling to find direction in life, like many at that age. Stallone revealed that the prequel show would guide audiences through Rocky’s journey into adulthood, “set against the backdrop of major world events like the Vietnam War, John F. Kennedy’s assassination, and Muhammad Ali’s rise to fame.”
However, the biggest challenge for the show would be portraying a 17-year-old Rocky—as de-aging Stallone isn’t feasible, and casting someone else in the role could lead to additional complications.
According to ScreenDaily, the filming of Cliffhanger 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to Stallone’s ’90s classic, is set to begin this fall. The original movie was well-received, earning $255 million worldwide. Production will take place at various locations in Austria and Bavaria, with French screenwriter and director Jean-Francois Richet at the helm of the project. Cliffhanger 2 has yet to receive a release date.
