The final chapter in the Warrens’ story centers on the infamous Smurl family haunting and their now-grown daughter, Judy. The Warrens are retired, with Ed stepping back due to health issues, but they are pulled back into the world of the paranormal when the intensity of the Smurl case becomes too great to ignore.

Based on a real-life haunting from the 1980s, the case is portrayed as their most terrifying and personal yet—featuring a demonic entity with a deep vendetta against the family. Meanwhile, Judy begins to show signs of inherited clairvoyant abilities, adding a new layer to the battle against evil.

Michael Chaves directs from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick & James Wan, based on characters created by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes. The Conjuring: Last Rites will be the darkest installment in the franchise.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan said, “The beating heart of this franchise is Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson playing Ed and Lorraine.” Wan added, “The family dynamic, the faith the characters have, and the faith that they have in each other are really the things that drive this particular franchise. I do think that’s what people love about it. At least for me and Peter Safran, it’s really about finding a way to tell the stories of these characters and to wrap them up in a way that feels respectful to where we started with them.”

The executive producers are Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, Hans Ritter and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

The Conjuring: Last Rites will be released worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, exclusively in theaters and IMAX—debuting in North America on September 5, 2025, and internationally beginning September 3, 2025.
