The series is developed by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson for HBO. The series follows Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), an aspiring pop idol who, after having a nervous breakdown that causes her last tour to be canceled, resolves to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in America and begins a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult (The Weeknd).
The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, Abel Tesfaye as Tedros, Suzanna Son as Chloe, Troye Sivan as Caleb, Moses Sumney as Izaak, Jane Adams as a director for Jocelyn’s music video, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane as Angel, Eli Roth as Jocelyn’s uncle, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef as a model, Da’Vine Joy Randolph as a legendary soul singer, Mike Dean as a music producer, Ramsey as a DJ, Hank Azaria as Jocelyn’s father, Melanie Liburd as Jenna, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley, and Nico Hiraga.
According to the series’ star-studded cast, during its production (Via Rolling Stone), “The Idol” had “gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails.” the HBO series has already earned quite a reputation.
The Idol will premiere on HBO on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 9 p.m. According to reports, The Idol will premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May.
