According to Variety, ‘The Little Mermaid’ is the fifth-highest-grossing debut for Memorial Day weekend. Last year, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ set a new record with its $160.5 million opening. Universal’s ‘Fast X’ earned $28.7 million over the holiday weekend, struggling domestically with $113.6 million in two weeks. However, it excelled internationally, grossing nearly $400 million, bringing the worldwide total to over $500 million. ‘Fast X’ (Fast X) ranks as the third highest-grossing film of 2023 and the fifth highest-grossing film series of all time, grossing the $7 billion mark for the “Fast & Furious” franchise. ‘The Little Mermaid’ earned $38 million on its domestic opening day. The film is also the 7th highest preview gross for a G-/PG-rated movie in history at the box office, with $10.8 million earned on Thursday.
The film follows the youngest of King Triton’s daughters, Ariel (Halle Bailey) a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls for the dashing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King). Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to experience life on land.
