The Sandman has been canceled by Netflix following sexual assault allegations against creator Neil Gaiman. Season 2, which has already been filmed, will be the final season and is set to premiere in 2025.

In a statement, The Sandman showrunner Allan Heinberg said, “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

So, Season 2 will be the end of The Sandman show. This decision comes after several sexual misconduct accusations against Gaiman, who created The Sandman comics and the TV show. He was accused in a Tortoise Media podcast in July 2024. According to Variety, Netflix and Warner Bros. Television had already planned to end the show with Season 2 before the accusations. After the sexual misconduct accusations, Gaiman left the final season of Good Omens on Amazon. Disney also stopped working on a movie based on his book The Graveyard Book.

Recently, Dark Horse, his longtime comic book publisher, dropped him, and his Coraline musical was canceled.

What is the Plot of The Sandman Season 2?

The Sandman Season 2 follows the “Season of Mists” storyline from Gaiman’s comics. In this story, Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) gives up control of Hell and hands Morpheus, also known as Dream (Tom Sturridge), the key to its gates. This leads many immortals to try to convince Morpheus to give the key to them.

In Season 2, Tom Sturridge reprises his role as Lord Morpheus/Dream, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Matt Ryan as John Constantine, Kaitlyn Dever as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, and Henderson Wade voices Matthew the Raven. Recently, Wil Coban, Gavin Spokes, Kayode Akinyemi, and Daniel Hoffmann-Gill were announced as new cast members. Also featuring in the upcoming season are Amber Rose Revah, Charlotte Bate, Daphne Alexander, and more.

Season 2 features new additions: Ruairi O’Connor (‘Surprised by Oxford’, ‘The Spanish Princess’) as Orpheus, Indya Moore (‘Pose’, ‘Escape Room: Tournament of Champions’) as Wanda, Ann Skelly (‘The Nevers’, ‘Kissing Candice’) as Nuala, Douglas Booth (‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’, ‘The Dirt’) as Cluracan, Freddie Fox (‘White House Farm’, ‘The Riot Club’) as Loki, Laurence O’Fuarain (‘Vikings’, ‘Rebellion’) as Thor, Clive Russell (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Ripper Street’) as Odin, Jack Gleeson (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Out of Her Mind’) as Puck, and Steve Coogan (‘Philomena’, ‘Stan & Ollie’) as Barnabas.

The Sandman was developed by Gaiman, showrunner Heinberg, and David S. Goyer, based on the DC comics of the same name by Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg. All episodes of Season 2 were directed by Jamie Childs.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the show’s director Childs, confirmed that season 2 will explore Greek tragedy.

Childs said, “We’re doing Greek tragedy, and then we’re doing cyberpunk, and we’re doing contemporary drama, or we’re doing cat and mouse chess stuff.”

The Sandman Season 2 will premiere on Netflix in 2025.
