Directed by Jon M. Chu, with a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox and songs by Stephen Schwartz, the film is the first of a two-part adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Holzman. The musical is loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which itself draws inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels, and the iconic 1939 film adaptation.

After two decades, the beloved and enduring stage musical makes its journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event. The untold story of the witches of Oz stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege, who has yet to discover her true heart. As they forge an unlikely friendship, their extraordinary adventures will see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The cast of the film includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, Karis Musongole as young Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, and Cesily Collette Taylor as young Nessarose. Additionally, Peter Dinklage provides the voice of Dr. Dillamond with Luisa Guerrerio as the movement artist, Michelle Yeoh portrays Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum appears as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Bronwyn James plays Shenshen, Andy Nyman and Courtney-Mae Briggs portray Governor and Mrs. Thropp, respectively, and Keala Settle plays Miss Coddle.
The ensemble also includes Aaron Teoh as Avaric, Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Dulcibear with Madeline Wilson as the movement artist, Jenna Boyd as the voice of Wolf Doctor with Sarah Mardel as the movement artist, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik.
