Sam Claflin is set to star in the series adaptation of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo‘ by Billie August, with filming currently underway.
The mid-19th-century story, penned by Alexandre Dumas, unfolds the story of a 19-year-old French first mate falsely accused of treason, leading to his unjust imprisonment in the forbidding Château d’If near Marseille. The plot thickens as fellow prisoner Abbé Faria reveals the conspirators behind the protagonist’s downfall—Fernand Mondego, Danglars, and De Villefort. As their lengthy incarceration progresses, Faria imparts knowledge to Dantès and discloses the existence of a hidden treasure.
The cast also includes Jeremy Irons, Ana Girardot, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Blake Ritson, Karla-Simone Spence, Michele Riondino, Lino Guanciale, Gabriella Pession, and Nicolas Maupas.
August is updating Dumas’ classic while respecting its legacy. Thanks to Mediawan’s €100M ($107M) deal with Entourage Ventures, this European collaboration is set to broadcast on French and Italian channels and maybe even worldwide next year.
Produced by Mediawan and Carlo Degli Esposti, this prestige limited series has generated increasing excitement during its five-month production period in Malta.
