Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Penélope Cruz (On the Fringe) are reuniting in Day Drinker, a thriller directed by Marc Webb for Lionsgate.
In Day Drinker, a cruise ship bartender (Cruz) meets a mysterious day drinker (Depp), only for the two to find themselves entangled in a criminal underworld and connected unexpectedly.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is launching international sales for Day Drinker at this week’s American Film Market. This project represents Depp’s most prominent attempt at a Hollywood comeback—following controversies related to his public divorce from Amber Heard. The film marks the fourth time that Depp and Cruz have worked together—after Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.
Depp recently starred in the French period drama Jeanne du Barry and directed the indie film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, featured at the Rome Film Festival.
Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, known for producing the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate, along with Adam Kolbrenner, who has credits including The Tomorrow War, Free Guy, and Prisoners, and Zach Dean, who wrote the original spec screenplay and has established himself in the action genre with films like The Tomorrow War, Fast X, and the upcoming The Gorge, are all producing Day Drinker. Chelsea Kujawa is overseeing the project for Lionsgate, while Dan Freedman negotiated the deals for the studio.
In a statement, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said, “Day Drinker combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world, and there is no better filmmaker than Marc or two more perfectly cast actors than Johnny and Penélope to bring that world to life.”
Webb is best known for directing 500 Days of Summer and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He is currently working on a live-action version of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot for Disney, which is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025.
Day Drinker has not yet received a release date update from Lionsgate.
